Barnyard Portraits (including our alpacas)

by Barbara Chase

Barbara has been visting local farms and observing chickens, pigs, cows, sheep, goats and our alpacas. The portraits she creates feature both eyes whenever possible, as she feels the soul of the painting is in the eyes.

Join us for the opening reception on April 12th from 5:30-8pm

Spring Clean Up

We invite you to join us as we hang out with the alpacas as we rake up their pastures and secure all of their fencing. Any amount of time is helpful.  Bring along a bag lunch and your favorite rake! The alpacas are carrying a lot of fiber and this is the best time to see them before shearing day.

Annual Shearing Day

Northern Solstice Shearing Day Event 2019 will be Sunday, May 19th. Shearing will take place rain or shine. For those of you who have already been involved, things will be the same.  We have 35 alpacas to be shorn so it will be a busy day. For those of you considering attending for the first time, here are the details.

We have a SMALL CORE GROUP of individuals (typically the same people each year) who will be doing several types of jobs varying from sweeping, vacuuming, collecting fiber, and weighing fiber)  Our shearer, Jay and his assistants, will be doing the precision work of running the electric shears.  All others who attend can help out by carrying fiber from the barn to the garage, scooping poop (the poop boxes should be kept clean the entire day to keep the alpacas feet as clean as possible prior to shearing), and helping remove debris from the fiber in the fiber sorting area.  There are not a lot of jobs available in the shearing area, but you are all welcome to watch, from a distance behind fence panels so as to keep the operation safe for all.  It is extremely important that we all keep out of the shearer’s work area. This is for everyone’s safety including you, the alpacas and the shearers. It really is an amazing process to see and the fiber that comes off the alpacas is just gorgeous!

You can begin arriving as early as 7:30 am. We will provide coffee and morning snacks as well as lunch for the CORE shearing/ fiber sorting team. Feel free to BRING A BAG LUNCH and observe this amazing event.

If you haven't already, please contact us to confirm your involvement or to learn more about this awesome day!
